I. Introduction to the History Department

The History Department of Nanchang University originated from the History Research Office of Jiangxi University, established in 1958 by Mr. Gu Jiguang. The History Department was formally founded in 1980 and began enrolling undergraduate students. In 2003, as part of the university’s departmental restructuring, the History Department was integrated into the School of Humanities, where it remains today. The department currently offers two undergraduate programs: History and Archival Science. It also hosts a doctoral program in Historical Heritage Management, a master’s program in Chinese History (first-level discipline), and a master’s program in Archival Science (second-level discipline).

The History program is a recognized brand specialty in Jiangxi Province. In 2019, it was selected as a provincial first-class specialty construction site, and in 2020, it was designated as a national first-class undergraduate construction program. The Archival Science program, established in 1997, is the only higher education undergraduate and master's degree program in archival management in Jiangxi Province.

The department achieved early academic milestones, with the Chinese Ancient History master’s program approved in 1984, making it the first humanities discipline in Jiangxi Province to grant master’s degrees. The Specialized History master’s program was approved in 2002, followed by the Archival Science master’s program in 2006. In 2011, Chinese History was authorized as a first-level discipline master’s program. In 2013, the department secured approval for a doctoral program in Historical Heritage Management (second-level discipline). Efforts are currently underway to apply for a new doctoral program authorization in Chinese History.

The History Department currently employs 36 full-time faculty members, including 17 professors and 8 associate professors. Among them, 33 hold doctoral degrees, and 13 have been recognized with national or provincial talent titles. The department hosts one Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education (cooperative), one Jiangxi Province University Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Team, three Jiangxi Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Bases, and one Nanchang University Liberal Arts Research Special Zone pilot platform.

With a strong academic legacy, the History Department has established four stable disciplinary research directions: Chinese Ancient History, Chinese Modern History, Chinese Specialized History, and Chinese Historical Philology, each with distinct characteristics and scholarly influence.
